Jesuit & St. Martin’s win at Mount Carmel Invitational

The Mount Carmel Invitational featured twenty teams from Louisiana, Mississippi, and Florida. In the Varsity division, both Jesuit and St. Martin’s Episcopal entered the final match undefeated. Jesuit led 230-220 after 13 questions; down the stretch, Eddie Redman had two powers to help clinch the game for Jesuit. In the final match, Bryce Monier had five powers to lead St. Martin’s. Behind Jesuit and St. Martin’s, Lusher took third place and Fontainebleau A took fourth.

In the JV & Novice bracket, St. Martin’s B team emerged victorious with a perfect 10-0 record. The leading scorer for St. Martin’s B was ninth-grader Clara Conatser. St. Paul’s and Fontainebleau B tied for second with 7-3 records.

Trophies were presented to the top scorers in the varsity preliminary matches. They were Bryce Monier, Eli Issokson (Lusher), Caleb Rogers (Jesuit), and Matthew Bonner (Holy Cross).

Kickoff ends in all Jesuit Final

New Orleans' teams Jesuit and Lusher face off in a varsity semi-final read by Tulane alum Ryan McLaren.

On Saturday at Xavier University of Louisiana, 27 teams from Louisiana, Florida, Mississippi, and Texas competed in the first ever French Quarter Kickoff. After 12 rounds of play, teams from Jesuit High School in New Orleans and Strake Jesuit of Houston met in the varsity final. Strake Jesuit won the match 500-215 and took top honors. In the semi-final round, Strake Jesuit defeated 2017 state runner-up Ben Franklin 450-200 in one semifinal while Jesuit defeated 2017 state champion Lusher 390-250 in the other semi-final. In the picture above, New Orleans’ teams Jesuit and Lusher face off in a varsity semi-final read by Tulane alum Ryan McLaren.

After finishing in the top 8 of the varsity group at the tournament, teams from Ben Franklin, Jesuit, Lusher, Pensacola, J.M. Tate, St. Andrews, and Strake Jesuit qualified for the 2018 NAQT High School National Championship Championship to be held on Memorial Day Weekend in Atlanta, Georgia. This is the first tournament ever held in Louisiana that qualified 8 teams for an NAQT national event.

In the Junior Varsity group, a team from Pensacola, Florida defeated the younger squad from New Orleans Jesuit in the final 275-135. The victory avenged an earlier loss to the  Blue Jay squad in the preliminaries. Pensacola’s second jV team and Notre Dame were the two semi-finalist teams in the JV group.
